The castle was erected by Berthold II, Duke of Zähringen, in 1078.
Earlier, the dukes of Alamannia graded a "stronghold" on the castle mountain
and extended it to a fortress from 270 AD.
The dukes of Zähringen founded monasteries, towns (such as Freiburg,
Offenburg, Rottweil and Bern) and castles, and developed the country
through the creation of roads and paths.
During the Peasants’ War (1525), all the parts of the fortress burned down
and during the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648), the fortress was completely
destroyed.
Until today, the castle has a splendid viewpoint that already attracted
people 2000 years ago.
In 1655, the building of our Waldrestaurant was erected on the ground of
the former "arms manufacturer" of the dukes of Zähringen.
The first generations occupating this building were farmers and stock
breeders.
By the end of the 18th century, a hiker room was set up.
In 1934, an enlargement was built and many of our tables and chairs were
built in this time.
If you want to visit the castle which is only at 5 minutes walk from our Waldrestaurant, please feel free to ask us for the key.
